My prior house in town was not super insulated. There are various reasons for that.

We heated primarily with wood, lessening our impact on fossil fuel depletion. I think in our worst month last winter, the natural gas bill was about $100, which also included cooking, hot water and dryer. Also, when we purchased the house, we were broke. We really didn't have the resources to take on a full blown remodel to superinsulate.

One of the reasons we purchased the house in town (our starter house) was that it had been reasonably well insulated before we bought it. I looked up the gas useage for the previous two years, and it was very reasonable. And, although we did not attain "super" insulation levels, we did add insulation and weather stripping in ways that were not very expensive or time consuming.

There is really no way around the fact that to add significant insulating power, you are going to need some physical space. There are only three logical possibilities for where you can put the insulation. You can add it to the inside, or you can add it to the outside, or you can add it to both the inside and the outside. Since this house was fairly small, and the bedrooms were "adequate" in size but smallish, that precluded adding the insulation to the inside. Adding to the outside would have meant major renovations on a house that we intended to sell shortly.

This house was not a great candidate for a complete remodel (by us).

troytroy and christinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11165391897346941872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32179076.post-1161895447551262822006-10-26T13:44:00.000-07:002006-10-26T13:44:00.000-07:00David said...Troy - did you attempt to super-insul...David said...

Troy - did you attempt to super-insulate your previous house? If not, why not?

I share your motivations and laying out the numbers makes it seem more feasible for those of us who don't have the knowledge to build or thoroughly renovate houses ourselves.

thanksRachelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07914874659932515569noreply@blogger.com
